Born on 29th August 1854 in Sydney Australia, Joseph Jacobs was the pre-eminent folklorist of his age. While he wrote books on history, religion and Jewish traditions and faith, and translated others, he is best remembered for his books on fairytales and folktales.
He travelled widely, including prolonged stays in Britain and the US where he settled for the later part of his life.
He passed away on 30th January 1916, and is buried in New York. His final book was published posthumously.
